Bass on the Fly Tourney

Vermont's first ever bass tournament exclusively for fly anglers!

Results...

The "Bass on the Fly" tournament was a huge success wrapped into a small package. We had about 15 people spread amongst 7 or 8 boats ranging from solo kayaks to 18' runabouts. We met at 9am and were fishing by about 9:30'ish under bright sunny skies and some seriously taxing winds! As the day went on, recreational boat traffic increased heavily and any coves near the main channel became tough to fish.
We decided at the ramp to lower the minimum size limit to 10" since 10-12" smallies are pretty common. Everyone threw down $25 a piece + $5 for a big fish pool. The good news is that every single angler caught fish. The problem was finding tournament legal bass. There were lots of 9-11" bass caught which were still good fun on the fly, but not worth anything for the tournament. We had some great anglers out there all at once all having more/less the same luck. In the end it was Steve Stanley taking home the pot for most points and biggest fish, Jonathan DeBono took second aboard the same boat and Brian Price of team "High Life" landed a proud third place spot on the podium. Ken Capsey and Brian Price of Team High Life were also awarded the bass wall clocks for deciding they had time for a lunch break amidst the tournament flurry.
Following the event, we had a bbq up at Little River State park and shared some laughs and brews. After 7-8 hours of fishing in the heat, everyone was pretty well wiped out and I dozed off listening to the rain on the tent and thinking of when the next event will be. There's no doubt that this tournament among friends was the start of an annual tradition and I look forward to watching it grow.
Huge thanks to Brendan Hare for sparking the interest in this thing from the get-go and securing the necessary permits to make it all happen!
We're already brainstorming different venues, so be on the lookout for the next Bass on the Fly Tournament near you!! <"((((((((((><
